Dominating the news cycles has been recent federal legislation known as President Trump's “One Big Beautiful Bill.” Now passed, the result is significant changes to commercial clean energy policy, particularly in the solar energy sector.
The bill accelerates the sunset of key tax credits such as the 30% Investment Tax Credit (ITC) which has been essential to the shortening the return on investment (ROI) of most commercial solar energy projects.
The new bill changes limit the availability of credits for projects that begin construction after mid‑2026. The new bill imposes an excise tax on solar equipment that includes components sourced from certain foreign countries, such as China. For commercial solar developers and businesses planning installations, this means higher material costs, tighter construction timelines, and increased project complexity.
What does this mean for your business? Timelines and eligibility have become more critical than ever. Projects that begin soon may still qualify for existing incentives, but delays could result in the loss of the lucrative 30% ITC and having to absorb increased material costs.
